Lyn Smith FRAS, Director of the Solar Section of the British Astronomical Association (BAA), presented this wonderfully illustrated presentation on-line from her home in Scotland on Monday 1 June, 2026.

Abstract:
Lyn has been observing the Sun (safely) for decades and she discusses her early childhood, how she got into astronomy and in particular solar observing. Lyn presented the work of the BAA Solar Section and how to organise data to produce useful solar observations that can be shared.
Her presentation concludes with a summary of Solar Cycle 25's progress, featuring stunning images from members of the Section.
Bio: Lyn Smith FRAS – BAA Solar Section Director
Lyn was fascinated by astronomy since the age of 6 when Sputnik went into Earth orbit and caused a world sensation; yes, that long ago! She joined the British Astronomical Association in her early teens and got her first telescope. Even at that early stage, our star the Sun was her main interest.
Lyn co-founded the Clydesdale Astronomical Society in 2006 and was chairman of the society for the first 8 years.
Also in 2006, Lyn became the Director of the British Astronomical Association Solar Section and is still in post, corresponding with solar observers around the globe. Her main duties are to co-ordinate monthly observations; produce a monthly newsletter reporting on solar activity; to give advice and encouragement to observers new to solar observing; and to give talks to public groups.
Lyn is a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society and in 2021 she was awarded the senior medal of the British Astronomical Association for her contribution to amateur astronomy over many years.
